Translation of Theophania. Der Geist der altgriechischen Religion by Walter F. Otto
Translated by Farasha Euker
Theophany stands as a monument to the long career of Walter F. Otto, whose works The Homeric Gods and Dionysus opened up new avenues for appreciation of Greek religion on its own terms. Rather than take a stricly philological, historical, or phenomenological position, Walter approaches the ancient texts with reverence, largely through literature and poetry. For Walter, the Greek Gods are living realities, sprung from the inconceivably ancient soil of eros cosmogonos. Theophany, despite being widely proclaimed Otto’s magnum opus, has not hitherto received a full translation into English.
